Please nobody make any kind of purchasing decisions based upon something as subtle as ghosting however. They undercut by price with the least effort. The point is that just because a screen is smaller doesn't automatically mean that the ereader is inferior. I would consider it NOT OVERPRICED considering that in every other way it is a better reader than the Paperwhite, and this comes from someone that thinks that the 7 inch is the ideal size and everyone should just buy a Libra 2! And that doesn't even get into Kobo instantly downloading ebooks, while the Kindle defers and slowly downloads even over the better wifi.ĮDIT: The discussion of ghosting is actually a really subtle issue that I think only veteran ereaders really know or care about, and that was not really the point of the comparison. Verdict: Despite the smaller size, the Clara 2E is better. My sideloaded Libre Baskerville will serve better. Not only did they miss the mark, but my favorite font Malabar was taken out to make way for this font WHICH IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. I probably won't end up using Rakuten serif long term for that reason. In the comparison I had to crank the weight by +4 to make it even closely match Bookerly with no bold at all. While both succeed, frankly the Rakuten serif is perhaps overly thin and sharp. The idea is to look nice and render well without calling attention to itself. But I have the launch version, and that one has A TON OF GHOSTING.įont comparison: I also compared the new default font (Rakuten Serif) to Bookerly! You can see that both strive for being an unassuming serif font. It could be that Eink quietly solved the ghosting issue on their new screens and if you buy the PW5 today you wouldn't see it. It is very rare, unlike the PW5 (and for that matter the Libra 2 and Sage). It is hard to make it perfectly white, and you really need to crank the light as well since it is so dim.Īnd then very importantly for me, I just don't see ghosting on the Clara 2E. On the Kindle it switches from too blue to too warm way far too quickly. And then the warmth adjustment on the Clara is perfect because it is WAY EASIER to find a neutral white. The photo shows flashlighting, but in person it is actually so hard to see that I consider it very uniform. On top of that the Clara's frontlight is also much brighter. Both the PW4 and PW5 use a plastic glossy screen which really hurts contrast (which is unlike the glass found on the Voyage and Oasis). I don't think my photos really do it justice for how different they are. Whether the light is off or on the background is brighter and the the ink is blacker. Where the Clara 2E shines: due to having a matte screen the contrast is MUCH BETTER. They both use the Carta 1200 screen which makes both devices quite fast and fluid. Where the two devices are tied: They both have usb-c and support for 5 GHz Wifi. Where the PW 5 shines: The Kindle Paperwhite 5 has a larger screen. And I chose them because the two ereaders are closely pricematched. That is to say people are just looking at comparing the two.
